CHAPTER 17

Ana rushes out of her office in full panic mode. Her concern for Ray overrides anything else. In the car, on their way to the airport, Ana updates Christian. He tells her than he has an important meeting that cannot reschedule and he will meet her there in a few hours’ times. Ana’s emotions exhaust her and Sawyer wakes her when they arrive at the hospital. There, Ana meets with Jose and his father, Jose Rodriquez Sr. The story of the accident is explained to Ana, and she is informed that the drunk driver who hit them had been taken into police custody. Christian arrives a few hours later and, not long after, the doctor comes to inform Ana of Ray’s condition. He is in the ICU in a medically-induced coma with severe internal bleeding and swelling on his brain. Ana goes to visit with Ray and tells him about everything she’s been doing and her hopes for him for the future. Christian talks Ana into leaving and going to a hotel to eat and rest. Christian is at a loss in dealing with the reality of Ana’s distressed state. He does everything he possibly can to give her what she needs. They take a bath and converse about off-topic subjects, which helps Ana to relax. Upon arriving back at the hospital to say goodnight to Ray, Christian surprises Ana. When they enter the ICU room housing her dad, Ana is greeted by Christian’s mother, Grace, and her medical colleague. She is assured that Ray is receiving the best care available and that he is doing very well. Ana visit with Ray, while Grace and Christian visit together in the waiting room. Christian and Ana retire to the hotel with Ana in much better spirits.
